Insist on Your Right to Education

Uneducated citizenry is like a pitch any game can be played on it. Illiteracy is what has given the politicians in Ghana the chance to fool so many people for so a long a time.

The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Mr Kwasi Pratt, has waded into the controversy surrounding government’s alleged contract with a Chinese firm to print school uniforms.

Mr Pratt on Tuesday descended on the Mills-led administration for warding a school uniform contract to a Chinese firm.
Expressing his disappointment on Peace FM’s morning show, Kokrokoo, he stated “what bores me the more is the explanation, the Minister of Education, and also Tony Aidoo gave on air.”

According to him, Tony Aidoo who is in-charge of government evaluation, and the educational Minister, Tettey Enyo explained that products of the Ghanaian Textile Companies are not competitive enough, and they do not deliver on their promises.
Besides, government needs companies that can pre-finance the project.

He said, the main aim of any government is to develop the country through local institutions and organisations available, but that is not what we are seeing.
According to him, such decisions by the government will rather kill our infant industries adding, “if you don’t have confidence in your own professionals who will?”

The Editor described the government’s action as a direct negation of the trade ministry’s efforts over the years to develop the nation’s human and natural resources and infant industries.

The Editor was speaking in reaction to Monday’s edition of the ‘Public Agenda Newspaper’ Publication, titled “Chinese firms Get School Uniform Contract.”
According to the paper, the government awarded the contract to the firm, because it wanted organisations that could pre-finance the printing, to meet the September deadline.
