NPP drags NDC to court for receiving “Chinese Communist” cash

Sir John, NPP General Secretary         The New Patriotic Party has formally written to the Attorney General demanding the prosecution of the leadership of the ruling National Democratic Congress for allegedly breaching the Political Party’s Act. The opposition party argues the NDC received donations from the Chinese Communist Party in contravention of the act which governs the funding of political parties in the country. The NDC is reported to have received office equipment worth over $40,000 from the Chinese Communist Party. The Political Parties Act states that only a citizen may contribute in cash or kind to the funds of a political party. The NPP General Secretary Kwadjo Owusu Afriyei says the ruling party must face the full rigours of the law. “One could really see that the NDC is in breach of sections 23 and 24 [of the Political Parties Act], he said. “It is our view that it is the Attorney General whose duty it is to initiate all criminal proceedings on behalf of the republic and therefore we have called on the Attorney General, in accordance with her constitutional mandate to initiate proceedings with a view to prosecuting the NDC officers.” The General Secretary of the NDC Johnson Asiedu Nketia will not comment on the specific allegation but rather he is daring NPP to take a legal suit if it so pleases. Meanwhile, Deputy Information Minister, Samuel Okudjato Ablakwa has called on the Electoral Commission to make a declaration on the matter. “I think that this is for the Electoral Commission to make a declaration on. I know all the parties have collaborations with other political parties and movements across the globe, so let’s see what the Electoral Commission sees on this matter.
