Choosing Dr. Bawumia was strategic – Yaw Buaben

Top officials of the opposition New Patriotic Party continue to offer various arguments in defence of the selection of Dr. Muhamadu Bawumia as the running mate to the party’s presidential candidate for December’s general elections.

Contributing to Multi TV’s current affairs discussion programme, pm: EXPRESS, a member of the NPP’s communications team, Yaw Buaben Asamoa explained it was a conscious strategy by the party to ensure national cohesion with religion and geography as the key considerations.

He said as a former deputy Central Bank boss, Dr. Bawumia is credited with most of the economic gains the NPP government attained during its eight-year rule.

“We considered his track record and his competitiveness”, he said, adding the different competencies of Nana and his running mate is a real asset going into the December polls.

He disagreed with the assertion it took too long for the party to arrive at the decision.

A political analyst and lecturer at the Ashesi University, Dr. Lloyd Amoah welcomed Dr. Bawumia’s retention but cautioned against continuation of what he termed the Washington concept or one way economic management.

According to him, “the challenge will be inventive and will demand creative re-modelling” adding “the value Dr. Bawumia brings is the real lift off”.
