Insist on Your Right to Education

Uneducated citizenry is like a pitch any game can be played on it. Illiteracy is what has given the politicians in Ghana the chance to fool so many people for so a long a time.

Cocoa smuggling: BNI capo grabbed

A National Security personnel, Kwaku Darko, has been arrested by the police CID for his alleged involvement in the recent smuggling of cocoa into Ivory Coast.

Joy News sources at the Police Headquarters in Accra say Kwaku Darko, believed to be a Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) operative, was picked up Tuesday evening.

The arrest comes in the wake of three-month comprehensive undercover investigations led by ace investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, on how Ghana's cocoa get smuggled.

The video documentary has officers from the Army, Police, Customs and National Security engaged in massive smuggling of cocoa to neighbouring Ivory Coast.

Already, eight customs officers and a policeman implicated in the cocoa smuggling have been arrested by the police CID.

Mr Anas Aremeyaw Anas, who is also the editor of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, has hailed the initial arrest of nine persons identified in the video as “a good start”.

That, notwithstanding, the journalist is pushing for more arrests to follow, as, according to him, his work indicted more than 40 people for their various roles in the smuggling of cocoa to Ivory Coast.

Arrest and detention of four soldiers: Wives demand answers from AG & BNI

Wives of the four soldiers of the 64 Infantry Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) who were recently arrested by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) in collaboration with the Defence Intelligence (DI) of the Ghana Armed Forces are up in arms against the Director of the BNI and the Attorney-General, challenging the basis for the ‘unlawful’ detention of their spouses.
The better halves of the four detained soldiers in a suit filed at the Human Rights Division of the High Court in Accra, challenged the A-G and the BNI boss to produce "the bodies" of the said Sergeants Michael Arthur and Richard Somuah as well as Corporal Charles Ankomah and Emmanuel Antwi in court tomorrow and "state the grounds for their detention by the bureau of national investigations without recourse to their constitutional rights under the 1992 constitution’’.
Counsel for the embattled soldiers, Joe Aboagye Debrah, who confirmed these recent developments to The New Crusading Guide, stated that what the BNI had done was of no consequence in law, adding that ‘You may be holding them for subversion or murder but you must still bring them to a court of competent jurisdiction and present your case for the court to determine.’
Madam Felicity Arthur on behalf of her husband and wives of the other soldiers, upon advice of her counsel stated in an affidavit that ‘’under Ghana’s 1992 constitution, more particularly Article 33 thereof and pursuant to Habeas Corpus Act, 1964 (act 244),the applicants herein now detained at an undisclosed location can and do hereby apply for an order of Habeas Corpus directed against the Director of the Bureau of National Investigation and the Attorney General to produce the soldiers and state the reason for their detention without authority or sanction from any court of competent jurisdiction. In her statement of affirmation, Madam Arthur said that “the continued incarceration and detention of our spouses by the bureau of national investigations and/or any other state institution or body without recourse to law is a breach of the 1992 constitution, more particularly articles 12 and 14 thereof’’.
Readers will recall that the Tuesday, November 24, 2009 edition of The New Crusading Guide in a story headline: “Arrest & detention of four soldiers… A case of alleged subversion or murder?’’ confirmed the arrest and incarceration of the four soldiers for their alleged role in the 2007 murder of Mr. Rokko Frempong, a former Deputy Managing Director of Ghana Commercial Bank.

National Security not ready for dismissed bodyguards - Ablakwa

Deputy Information Minister Okudzeto Ablakwa
Deputy Information Minister Okudzeto Ablakwa

A Deputy Information Minister, Okudzeto Ablakwa says the dismissed bodyguards of ex-government officials cannot enlist in National Security because the agency is already over-staffed.

He said National Security has conducted an internal audit which revealed “there was a lot of loitering and idling and these are the things they want to curb.”

The dismissed ex-security officers served former President Kufuor, his vice Alhaji Aliu Mahama, the former Speaker of Parliament, Ebenezer Sekyi-Hughes and other state officials.

They were appointed in 2001 when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) assumed office but Mr Okudzeto says the government does not have the money to keep all of them.

He however stated that the laid-off staff, if they are still interested in the security job, could apply to be formally recruited into other security agencies when entry application forms start circulating later this year.

“They are allowed to go through the necessary applications, go through the drill and then they would be properly enlisted,” he told Joy News Editor Matilda Asante-Asiedu.

Mr Okudzeto said the reports should not come as a surprise because the dismissals were part of the transition arrangements agreed upon with the previous administration.

“These are fallouts from the transition arrangements that we made some time in January,” he said.

President Kufuor, he said, was well-aware of the move and had co-operated with government. Indeed the former President selected the men he desire to work with, and they include civilians.

Asked about how President Mills’ guards were hired, Mr Okudzeto who said it was “not appropriate to discuss these security matters in the open,” said the president’s guards “are people who are very qualified who have gone through the right process.”

He said most of the president’s guards today are military and police officers whose records are without question.

BNI Director Ordered Us To Prevent Asamoah Boateng

bni-logo
An official of the Bureau of National Investigations at the Kotoka International Airport, Nana Kwame Osei, yesterday (Tuesday, 25th August, 2009) told an Accra Circuit Court, that the Acting Director of BNI, Edward Yaw Donkor, ordered them to stop former Information Minister, Asamoah Boateng, from traveling out of the country.

He said they received directives from Mr Yaw Donkor that Asamoah Boateng, his wife and children will be leaving the country on the 14 of June 2009 and that they should used any means to prevent Mr Asamoah Boateng from going out of the country. Nana Osei Kwame disclosed this during cross examination by counsel for Zuleika Asamoah Boateng who is facing trial for assaulting, insulting and forcible collection of Mr Asamoah Boateng’s passport from a public officer.

The witness, however, admitted that he had no arrest warrant to execute that directive and pointed out that, seizing Asamoah Boateng's passport was the only option he had to prevent him from traveling. He said Mrs Asamoah Boateng pounced on him, squeezed his neck and twisted his left arm before snatching the passport from him while his other colleagues were checking other passengers.

Counsel for Zuleika Asamoah Boateng, Nene Amegachater suggested to the prosecution witness that the seizure of Asamoah Boateng’s passport prompted the disagreement with the BNI officials at the Airport to which the witness replied in the affirmative. When asked whether he is aware that the laws of Ghana guarantee free movement of persons and that, that movement can only be prevented by due process, he replied in the negative and stressed that he was only acting under instructions by the BNI Director, Yaw Donkor, who had assigned him to ensure that Asamoah Boateng did not travel out of the country.

The prosecution witness also stated that he never saw Asamoah Boateng holding any baby when he tried to carry out his boss' orders and also denied that he was carrying a bag containing food meant for the baby. The case, presided over by Madam Ajoa Coleman, has been adjourned to today (Wednesday, 26th August, 2009).

Conduct of BNI: Two lawyers in legal tussle

The arrest of Stephen Gyimah son of the ex National Investment Bank boss Daniel Gyimah by the Bureau of National Investigations on Monday has opened yet another legal quandary.

Ace Ankomah a legal practitioner and President of the Greater Accra Branch of the Ghana Bar Association said if allegations that the BNI arrested, detained and restricted Mr. Gyimah without access to his lawyers are true, then the BNI is not only breaching the constitution, but “taking its fingers in the eye of the court.”

The BNI has suffered two earlier defeats at the courts for violating the rights of citizens- Mr Sammy Crabbe and Zuleika Asamoah Boateng.

Mr. Ankomah fears the repetition of the same offence will plunge the investigative body and its officials into needless contempt charges.

Whilst appreciating the enormity of the responsibility imposed on the BNI, he said it is in their own interest to operate within the law.

“The person who seeks to enforce the law must operate within the confines of the law,” he said.

He said if the BNI is averse with lawyers, then they must adopt other intelligence led investigations which does not require arrests, detention or restrictions.

But another lawyer disagrees.
Mr David Annan, a lawyer and a functionary of the ruling National Democratic Congress, said there is no law in the country's statutes requiring lawyers to be present before suspects are interrogated.

He said lawyers are only required to represent suspects at the law courts in order to prevent summary trials.

“The reason why right to counsel is important is not that when the interrogation is taking place the counsel has to be there. It is that when he is being sent to court he must have counsel with him because when he is going to court they will ask for bail and if the counsel is not there to explain matters properly and explain issues of law, he may be denied bail.”

He said the law must expressly states that suspects have the right to lawyers from the period of interrogation to prosecution at the courts.

Mr Annan also argued that judgments handed in favour of Mr. Crabbe and Zuleika Asamoah Boateng could not be applicable in other circumstances, insisting those were verdicts of a human rights court and could not be generalised.

“I am always surprised about views to the extent that judgment given at the human rights court is of general application. It is not," he said.

Daniel Gyimah ex boss of the NIB has been granted a bail GH¢500,000 with four sureties one to be justified.
The son of Daniel Gyimah, ex National Investment Bank boss has been arrested by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).

Stephen Gyimah, according to sources from the BNI, was picked up late Monday afternoon at an NIB branch in Accra, in connection with his father’s charges of causing financial loss to the state, as well as attempting to commit crime and forgery of documents.

Gyimah is said to have evaded arrest from the BNI, months after his father was arrested for issuing a $60 million promissory notes to Eland International, without consulting the board of the NIB.

But his lawyers who confirmed the arrest say the BNI has refused them access to their client.

Kofi Osei Owusu, one of the lawyers, said they would not be allowed to speak to him nor will they be allowed access to the directors of the BNI.

He told Joy News all efforts to find out the reason for the arrest of their client has failed.

He said they have no idea what charges, if any, have been preferred against their client, and the BNI will not provide any information at all on his arrest.

He described the arrest as a flagrant violation of the client's fundamental rights, hinting, they would resort to the law courts to force the BNI to produce their client.

Ghana: Is Obama shaking his head in disbelief?

...Where is President Mills in all these? Why has he maintained his silence despite the calls for him to step in?

Obama decided to choose Ghana out of about 48 countries in Sub Sahara Africa for his maiden visit because of what he calls Ghana's strong democratic credentials, human rights record, rule of law, freedom of speech and assembly and economic performance.

But barely one month after his visit he must be shaking his head for praising the country and authoring those praising words. He now wished he had not visited the country at all. He has now realised that Ghana too is an African country where nothing good could come from. The question he is asking is, "Is this the country that I visited just one month ago? I thought they were peaceful democrats who respect the rights of their citizens" shaking his head in disbelief. He is now angry with his advisors for deceiving him into choosing Ghana. Ghana is no better than my father's Kenya he might be exclaiming. In my father's Kenya they steal, they arrest, they detain and they kill. In Ghana too they steal, they arrest, detain and kill. So what is the difference he might have asked Mr. Carlson his top envoy to Africa?

Ever since Obama's visit a lot has happened in the country. Barely a day goes without an opposition member been arrested and detained by the BNI or someone been beaten to death or shot dead by the Police and the BNI.

Ghana is slowly joining the likes of Zimbabwe where the state security apparatus arrest and detain Movement of Democratic Change MPs or members at will. Like Guinea where life has become so cheap that Ghana's ambassador was attacked by the state security forces, our nation too is slowly turning into a police state with the BNI arresting and detaining people and interrogating them without their lawyers being present. We are told that Lawyers who followed Asamoah Boateng to the BNI were pushed and heckled by operatives of the Organisation. The lawyers were also not allowed to sit in during the BNI meeting with their client even though the laws of our land dictates that a person must have his lawyer present when been interrogated. Even though the BNI claims to have secured a bench warrant for Asamoah Boateng's arrest his lawyers were not shown a copy of the warrant.

Besides, the BNI operatives did not spare the wife of Asamoah Boateng. She too was dragged and pushed into a gutter. Like all unprofesional security agencies who use brute force, threats, intimidation, harassment the BNI is increasingly showing itself as no exception. Any cultured organisation treat women with respect and dignity but the behaviour of Atta Mills' BNI leaves much to be desired. Their unprofessional behaviour at the airport where they allowed Asamoah Boateng and his family to finish going through departure formalities only for them to enter the plane and ground it, explains why the label 'developing country' always go with us. Why did the BNI allow the family to board the plane before going in to disturb everyone there?

Betty Mould Iddrissu the Attorney General is as pathetic as the BNI itself. Instead of rising to defend Mrs. Asmoah Boateng and her children she has joined the BNI wagon in mistreating them. Women are their own enemies indeed. Consider the trauma Asabee's children are going through having to watch their parents being forcefully removed from the plane. What examples are we leaving for them? Two times they have seen their parents being yelled at, being dragged, being pushed around at the airport, in the plane. How can the peace lover Mills explain to these kids what is happening to their parents? Father of all indeed!

When a court ruled that the passport of the former foreign minister be handed to him the BNI and the Attorney General say no way. We will give to him at our time and place of choice. This shows that neither the BNI or the A-G respect the court and its ruling. A contempt of law? Not in Atta Mills' Ghana. The BNI says it arrested and detained Asamoah Boateng because they could not locate him. Instead of going to Asabee's house the BNI went to his in-law's house as if Asabee lives in his in-law's house. What effort did the BNI make to contact Asabee's lawyers when the BNI could not find him? There is no indication that the BNI called Asabee's lawyers to find out about his whereabout. Did the BNI leave a note in Asabee's house to the effect that he was being sought? The only excuse the government has given concerning Asabee's arrest is that he was arrogant when he was in government. But no where in our constitution has it said that a person should be arrested if he is arrogant.

Asamoah Boateng was prevented from travelling by the BNI even though he had told the court he would be travelling for a week. He was later arrested and detained for days and when his sympathisers organised themselves to hold a candle vigil for him they were tear gassed, beaten and murdered by the BNI and their police counterpart.

Can't the BNI go about its work professionally without the drama that it is creating? Is the BNI aware that public opinion is against it?

The culture of violence and impunity seem to be growing by the day. When Mpiani was invited by the BNI he too was detained for more than 10 hours before finally being released.

Mr. Sammy Crabbe, NPP Regional Chairman claims he was threatened with arrest and detention when he appeared before the BNI for a ‘friendly conversation’. He has since sued the BNI and A-G for abuse of his human rights.

Peace FM Online has reported that the Eastern Regional Women’s Organiser of the NDC, Evelyn Ama Koran, was beaten by the Akwatia NDC executives, for being a hypocrite.Source:peacefmonline.com, Friday, 14 August 2009.

Since January 2009 Ghanaians have witnessed unemployed youth, apparently from the President's own NDC party threatening and forcefully seizing toilets in Accra, Cape Coast, Kumasi and Tamale. These NDC lawless thugs have used force, threats and intimidation against employees of National Youth Employment Programme and National Health Insurance Authority at Juaso, Bibiani and some other places and demanding their sack.

"The harassment of certain individuals by the NDC government is very unfortunate especially when the head of the government is a Law Professor who should know well when it comes to human rights abuses" says a Political Activist.

Slowly a peaceful nation is becoming like a banana republic. Former President Kuffour has already warned that trouble is slowly brewing in the country saying the government is behaving like there has been a coup.

The Christian Council of Ghana, a well respected body in the country has also added its voice to the ongoing mistreatment of citizens of this nation. The Council on Friday 13 August 2009 expressed regret about recent events surrounding the former Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr Stephen Asamoah Boateng and the Bureau of National Investigations and called for peace.

A statement signed by the Reverend Fred Deegbe, General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, said it had also noted with regret the loss of life and the alleged treatment of his wife and legal counsel on Thursday."We believe that citizens should be treated with honour and dignity in accordance with the law and due process, as we seek justice and accountability," it said.

The Christian Council of Ghana noted with concern the "culture of vendetta that seems to be taking root in our country" and called on the government and various leaders "to eschew this so that we can live in peace and progress and be the truly democratic and lawful country we seek to be". Source: Ghana News Agency, 14 August 2009.

The Council has therefore petitioned the President to step in to calm the situation but he seems not bothered, even though he professes to be a peace enthusiast. Will the President listen to the Christian Council? So far there is no indication that he would. The question many Ghanaians are asking is what would have happened if Mills had said he was not a peace loving man? Definitely half of Ghanaians may have been given to his dogs.

In what it saw as government blatant abuse of the rights of its citizens The Statesman in an editorial critically condemned the government for failing to protect the rights of its own citizens. Part of the editorial reads, "What we find most worrying is the posture of the government, specifically the President and his Attorney General, both of whom are lawyers. They are exhibiting a very worrying contempt for the rule of law and civil rights. The editorial quoted two prominent civil society actors calling on the government to protect the rights of its citizens rather than abusing them. "The head of Legal Resources, Edward Amuzu, is calling on Mrs Betty Mould Iddrisu to rather focus on defending the fundamental rights and liberties of the citizen than to fighting against it", it says. Source: myjoyonline.com, Friday, 14 August 2009. But will they listen to such a good advice? No, I don't think so.

Where is President Mills?

And where is President Mills in all these? Where is his leadership in the ongoing saga and who is advicing him to keep quiet while Ghanaians are being murdered? Has he chosen not to say anything for fear of being attacked by those who placed in him in the Castle? Is he trying to pleased the many factions in the NDC and Rawlings in particular for promising not to attack his government again? Does his silence mean that he is aware of everything that is going on but has chosen not to do anything about it? Mr. President what could be more important issue to attend to than BNI's infringement of people's human rights? Nobody knows what is going on except Mills.

There are two words that sum up Mills' poor handling of everything in the country. Weak leadership. Since he took office Mills seems to have been overwhelmed by the responsibilities of government and as a result has chosen to blame his predecessor for all his woes. He has constantly being saying that the debt incurred under Kuffour's regime has preventing him from improving the economy. A very cheap excuse isn't it?

President Mills seems to worry about the spate of defeats that the court has been handing his government. He is also seem to worry about the poor performance of the economy which has taken a nose dive since he took office. The Governor of Bank of Ghana has declared that he can no longer work with the Law Professor and as such he is calling it quit at the end of this August. This apparently is because of the poor handling of the economy by Mills and his angents.

The economic situation in the country seems to have moved from worse to the unthinkable and there are many indicators which point to the fact that the economy has been left to sink under the watchful eye of the President. Since taking office, inflation has been soaring hitting more than 20% in June. Fuel prices are higher today than they used to be 6 months ago. Unemployment is more than 20% and is still rising steadily with companies like Vodafone threatening to slash over 950 jobs. The currency the Cedi has lost more than 30% of its value putting prices of commodities beyond the reach of the ordinary Ghanaian.

Under the watchful eye of the President fuel shortages is becoming a norm with drivers in Greater Accra, Volta, Brong Ahafo and Northern Regions being forced to queue for long hours to the detriment of their businesses. Fishermen in the country have complained bitterly that they cannot get premix fuel to go to sea despite the fact that they are in their peak season, a situation that has forced them to issue threats to government that they would hit the streets if nothing is done to salvage the situation. In a message that sums up the failure of Mills' government displeasure of Ghanaians with the performance of the government someone texted to Joy News at 6pm that "Mills promised us free fuel, now we cannot get it to buy. Better Ghana indeed". Source: Joy News Wednesday, 12 August 2009.

Depicting a government that is in disarray, sick and falling apart, the Spokesperson for Jerry Rawlings, Mr. Kofi Adams has even called on the President to stop sleeping behind the wheel and sack people in his government that he Adams considers to be saboteurs. “In as much as their actions are condemnable, I think that the best thing for the President to do is to quickly clear out those who are perceived to be sabotaging his administration, to satisfy party members,” he said, adding “We have four years mandate from Ghanaians and they expect us to deliver. If there are some people who are sabotaging the government, they must be removed". “We want to deliver to the people of Ghana and if one's actions are clearly undermining the activities of the government, then that person must be sacked for another person to take over". Source:The Chronicle, Thursday, 06 Aug 2009.

There are reports that NDC Propagandists in the Northern and other Regions have turned against the goverment and is bashing it for failling the nation. One such Propagandist is Mahama Sayibu, "a regular radio panelist who until now was seen as a supporter of the party and spoke in its favour on local radio stations, seems to be moving to a different direction. He has in recent times taken an entrenched position, made a u-turn and lashing at the Mills administration, to the shock of the NDC party kingpins in the region. Source:Daily Guide, Monday, 10 August 2009.

To make matters worse the government has suffered even in the areas where it has placed much effort.Over the last couple of weeks the government has suffered defeat after defeat in Court. On Friday 24 July 2009 the Appeal Court in Accra ruled that the two convicted drug barons that is Kwabena Amaning, aka Tagor, and Alhaji Issah Abass be set free for lack of evidence. Then came the ruling by an Accra Circuit Court on Wednesday 29 July that the Bureau of National Investigations has no power to confiscate the passport of Mrs. Zuleika Asamoah Boateng and was ordered to release the passport to her.

And as if that was not enough, on Tuesday 11 August 2009, the Fast Track High Court ruled against the Attorney General and the BNI and ordered them to return the passport of former Foreign Minister Akwasi Osei Adjei to him. And in another sign of weakness and cracks in the Mills government, the Deputy Attorney General has thrown in the towel and decided not to contest a case in which the Attorney General was contesting that Mr. Sammy Crabbe's Lawyer was present when he Crabbe was questioned by the BNI. Such defeats and actions are sending the wrong message to the the public that the government is failling on all fronts.

The defeats and the refusal to contest Mr. Crabbe's case have further sent a shockwave to the centre of the administration demoralising the already dysfucntional government machinery and sucking the remaining energy of ministers and staff alike. The Attoney General and her deputy who were caught pants down, have issued pronouncements to the effect that government is not pleased with the three judgements. The pronouncements have further exposed the government uneaseness and unhappiness with the way things are going in the country. However, like their boss there is nothing that they can do except to bark. Law experts have questioned the preparation the goverment made in presenting its cases but the defeats are nothing but an indication that the government has lost control in managing the country.

The heart and brain of the government were further shattered by the wind of deep seated corruption that has been blowing in the government and in the party. First came the confirmation by the Auditor General that its report has implicated Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni (current Foreign Minister) in financial malfeasance and wrong-doing. Then came the corrupt Muntaka khebab and pampas saga and allegation that he travelled to Germany with Ms Edith Zenayela who is believed to be his girl friend all at the expense of the nation forcing him to resign as sports minister.

The Muntaka saga was quickly followed by the allegations that Mr. Mahama Ayariga, Spokesperson of the President purchased five tractors meant for poor Ghanaian farmers and paid for only one.

A black hole was created in government when it was revealed that the Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffour suggested that, "donor inflows to the country must be channelled through his bank, Unibank" forcing Dr. Duffour to vehemently deny it.

But his denials did not settle the matter for the government when news surfaced in Nigeria and Ghana that the NDC's 2008 election victories were made possible through a $3.5m illegal cash donation made to Jerry Rawlings by the Governor of Rivers State in Nigeria. While panting for breadth the government and the party were given knockout blow when the Serious Fraud Office in the United Kingdom begun court proceedings against Mabey & Johnson for paying millions of pounds as bribe to 5 top officials of the NDC governemnt that ruled between 1994 and 1999. The trial is still ongoing and it is feared that further revealations as the trial proceeds will force the government to breadth its last. All these allegations of corruption and fraud have sucked the juice from the administration, putting it on defensive and making it less and less effective and efficient to deal with the more pressing issues that it has so far ignored.

The 50.23% of Ghanaians who voted for change in the 2008 Presidential election and who had expected real political action and serious effort to provide solutions to the problems are now cursing their stars for making a wrong change. The general feeling and perception is that the President is simply a failure or let me be charitable and say he is not delivering on his campaign promises. In admitting the failure of his governemt Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Communication speaking on Joy FM's News File programme on August 8, 2009 said "the recent premix saga was embarrassing for the government and promised it will never recur".

Also speaking to Joy News’ Elvis Adjetey, a youth activist of NDC Mr. Mohammed Aboagye said the leadership has not shown interest in the welfare of those at the grassroots since the party assumed office. He said “the way and manner our leadership are behaving now” leaves the grassroots supporters with little hope“. Source: myjoyonline.com, Tuesday, 11 August 2009. The question is how do you expect the governemt to show interest in the welfare of its citizens when it does not a welfare policy to implement? Asking a government that is occupied with less important matters to deliver is like asking a blind man to look for a black thread in a room full of darkness.

And he is not alone with that assessment. Mr. Gabriel Aggah founder of Atta Mills Foundation in an interview with the Chronicle descended heavily on the government and its operatives accusing them of growing horns while doing nothing to help the ordinary Ghanaian.

My advice to all those who wish Ghana well is that they should stand up and defend the constitution and the rights of citizens of this nation. We must not forget that what is happening in Somalia, Sudan and other places did not start in a day. They are the fruits of years of harassment, detention, torture. Rwanda was not plunged into turmoil in a day. A seed was sown and was nurtured before it started bearing the fruit that resulted in 800,000 people been murdered in just under three months.

The onus is on President Mills to act. He can choose to rein in on his attack dogs or he can choose to ignore the attrocities they are committing and allow the problem to fester on before exploding into another Liberia, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Chad or Zimbabwe. As for Obama he is still disapponted but he has consoled himself knowing very well that Ghana is still part of Africa.

NPP will resist illegal BNI invitations Ohene Ntow insists, but Asabee and wife turn in

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has resolved that members of the party who formed the last government, will no more cooperate with the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) over what they claim were illegal invitations.

According to the party, members should turn up to invitations by the BNI, only if the reason for the invitation is made known to them, and they are also allowed their lawyers to be present during interrogations.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, the General Secretary of the party, Nana Ohene Ntow, urged party faithful to demand the authority of an arresting body, before cooperating.

Giving reasons why the NPP had resolved to take this action, he said the BNI was shifting gradually from its mandate to conduct investigations in national issues, to political persecution and vendetta

He said the BNI had refused to give some decency to the rights of the invited individuals.

Citing examples, he noted that the former Chief of Staff honoured the verbal invitation of the BNI, but was kept idle for 10 hours without any attention, and was denied legal representation.

“In spite of this treatment, in a spirit of goodwill, Mr. Mpiani, up till today, continues to cooperate with the BNI, and continues to go to the BNI to assist with whatever work he is required to assist them in doing,” he emphasised.

He continued that the former Deputy Minister of Information, Mr. Frank Agyekum, was also invited, and was refused access to his lawyer, adding that in the case of the former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Osei Adjei, his passport was seized.

The General Secretary intimated that the former Minister of Information, Mr. Stephen Asamoah Boateng, aka Asabee, was prevented from travelling outside the country, although he had not been hinted by the BNI that he would be needed in the course of their investigations, adding that the situation caused a two-hour delay of the flight he was about to board, since his luggage had to removed from the aircraft.

According to him, the sister-in-law of Asabee, Ms. Yasmin Domua, was also invited by the BNI on Tuesday, and has since been kept in the custody of the BNI without access to her lawyer, Mr. John Ndebugre.

“The question in this case is, why didn't the BNI inform Mr. Asamoah Boateng of their intentions to question him, so he could reschedule any travel plans he might have?” he questioned.

He reiterated that the embarrassment caused on Mr. Asabee has resulted to the death of his 81 year old mother.

Nana lamented that till now, none of the former officials invited was privy to the reason for which they were invited, and that in almost all the cases, the operatives refused to identify themselves properly.

He concluded by hoping that the President and the government would consider the concerns raised by the NPP.

Mr. Ndebugre, who was also present at the press conference, in turn stated that his client, Yasmin, a representative of Plexiform Ventures, contracted him somewhere in March, this year to initiate legal action against the Ministry of Information, for refusing to pay her for work executed.

He reiterated that Mr. Asamoah Boateng and his wife had turned themselves in at the BNI, after the BNI had visited their home, and the residence of his wife's sister to invite them.
