Insist on Your Right to Education

Uneducated citizenry is like a pitch any game can be played on it. Illiteracy is what has given the politicians in Ghana the chance to fool so many people for so a long a time.

Ken Agyapong's Arrest: No Deaths Recorded At CID HQ - Police

The Police Service has described as a mere fabrication the allegation that two supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were killed at the premises of the Police CID headquarters on Monday during a fracas over the continuous detention of Kennedy Agyapong.

A deputy Communication Director of the NPP, Sammy Awuku, had earlier told Peace FM in Accra that two of their supporters had been crashed to death by a Police vehicle when the officers tried to move crowd out of the premises.

Irate fans of the NPP took to the streets in-front of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation to protest against the arrest of the Assin North MP, Kennedy Agyapong. Mr Agyapong is reported to have made comments inciting members of the NPP who are Ashantis to take up arms against their Volta counterparts.

The angry fans burnt tyres and hurled stones at the police during the encounter. Samuel Awuku, who was at the scene told XYZ News the chaos at the place was overwhelming because the police were misusing the coercive machinery of the state.

He accused the service of using brute force against the supporters stating: “You don’t fight such issues with the show of brute force. Now you have ordinary Ghanaians, supporters of Ken Agyapong and sympathisers of the NPP also taking to the streets.”

Mr Awuku added that: “the selective application of the rules of this country is what is causing this whole problem… President Mills wants to sacrifice the country? Ghana is in a state of abyss as said by His Excellency the former president (Rawlings). I am sad if this is the way things are going to go.”

But the police say, the allegation of recorded deaths is untrue. Speaking to XYZ News after the incident, acting Public Affairs Director of the Police Service, DSP Cephas Arthur said, “nothing of the sort happened there at the police headquarters.”

He said the police will commence the necessary investigations into the matter to bring the perpetrators of the violent act to book.

Meanwhile, Samuel Awuku has confirmed that his colleague, Yaw Buabeng Asamoah has also been arrested by the police. He said Mr Asamoah was arrested as the police swooped on the area to bring the commotion under control.
