Insist on Your Right to Education

Uneducated citizenry is like a pitch any game can be played on it. Illiteracy is what has given the politicians in Ghana the chance to fool so many people for so a long a time.

ZIMBABWE: DABENGWA DEMANDS AN APOLOGY FROM MUGABE

HARARE – Former Home Affairs minister and now interim leader of the opposition ZAPU party, Dumiso Dabengwa says true national healing in Zimbabwe can only be possible when President Robert Mugabe apologises for the 1980s Matebeleland atrocities perpetrated by his government.

An estimated 20 000 civilians are believed to have died in Zimbabwe’s western Matebeleland and Midlands provinces during the period now known as the Gukurahundi era.

“When we signed the unity accord in 1987,” Dabengwa said, “people in Matebeleland thought there was going to be an express apology from Mugabe.”

“Instead, Mugabe came out with a blanket amnesty for the perpetrators of the atrocities and has said nothing about this except to say it was an act of madness.

“Unfortunately this left a lot of anger and frustration among the people in Matebeleland.”

Dabengwa was responding to questions by The Zimbabwe Times last week which had sought his opinion on the new unity government’s national healing initiative.

The new government has set up a three-member ministerial team comprising members of Mugabe’s Zanu-PF and the two Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) parties to manage the process.

But Dabengwa feels the process would be futile if Mugabe did not swallow his pride and apologise for the bloodbath.

“People in Matebeleland are asking, what is there to heal when the leader of this whole thing (atrocities) is not willing to apologise.

“Some survivors want Mugabe to apologise and assist the orphans and those whose houses were burnt down during the atrocities.

“They want to see development programmes in their areas such as the sinking of boreholes and irrigation equipment as this may somehow lessen the pain of their losses.

“Some old women still have visible scars of beatings by Mugabe’s soldiers.”

During the period, Mugabe, then Prime Minister had unleashed his North Korean trained Five Brigade army to hunt down armed insurgents who were viewed sympathetic to the late Vice President Joshua Nkomo’s opposition PF Zapu party.

Nkomo was being accused by Mugabe of sponsoring the insurgents to destabilise his government.

The atrocities ended when Zanu and PF Zapu signed a unity agreement that left Mugabe as leader of the country while Nkomo became one of the two Vice Presidents.

Dabengwa, one of the PF Zapu leaders who spent five years in prison on alleged treason charges by Mugabe’s government, had opposed the unity accord.

He severed ties with Zanu-PF in March last year to support the candidacy of Simba Makoni who had bravely broken away from Zanu-PF to contest the presidential election as an independent.

Since the Gukurahundi period, Mugabe’s government has resisted calls to pacify the surviving victims of the carnage.

The only mention of the atrocities by Mugabe was during Nkomo’s burial in 1999 where he said the atrocities were “an act of madness”.

Dabengwa accused Mugabe of stopping him from identifying the remains of some of the Gukurahundi atrocities buried in mass graves for a dissent burial.

Dabengwa, who was Home Affairs minister between 1992 and 2000, said he had tried to bring in a team of Brazilian forensic experts to help government to identify the bones of the victims. This he hoped would pacify the victims and relatives of the dead.

He said it was not too late for Mugabe to make an explicit apology for the bloodshed.

“It’s never too late to do the correct thing,” he said.

MDC MAJORITY IN PARLIAMENT DWINDLES AS...

The well-orchestrated plot to persecute MDC MPs continues, with the latest purge on the MPs being the sentencing to two years in prison of Zaka North MP, Hon. Ernest Mudavanhu, on Tuesday. Hon. Mudavanhu was convicted by a Harare magistrate on trumped-up charges of abusing subsidised farming inputs distributed under the Government’s Farm Mechanisation Programme.

Hon. Mudavanhu’s conviction brings to five the number of MDC MPs convicted of various crimes while several others continue to face various trumped-up charges that are still before the courts.

The plot to convict the MPs is a well orchestrated plan by Zanu PF and other mischievous conspirators in the inclusive government to decimate the party’s majority in parliament.

In its latest plot, Zanu PF, assisted by the Attorney-General’s office, has also targeted five other MDC MPs on spurious charges ranging from kidnapping to public violence.

As a party of excellence, the MDC does not condone any form of corruption. We believe that the guilty should face the music but we remain concerned that only MPs from the MDC are criminals.

The bedrock and home of corruption is in Zanu PF but the wheels of justice have never moved in that direction. Moreover, even though it is public knowledge that Zanu PF was at the centre of the political violence that rocked the nation after the 2008 elections and led to the death of over 500 MDC members, no one from Zanu PF has been arrested.

This selective application of the law is clear testimony that the conviction of MDC MPs is politically motivated.

ZIMBABWE:JOHN NKOMO ACCUSED OF SODOMY

A BULAWAYO man who claims he was sodomised by John Nkomo, the front runner for second Vice President, was freed without charge on Wednesday.

Mncedisi Twala was arrested on Friday last week, a day after he made a report alleging he was sexually abused by the Zanu PF national chairman and Minister of State for National Healing in 2002.

Police wanted to charge him with making a false report as well as lying under oath.

But after Twala was clandestinely brought to the Bulawayo Magistrate’s Court for a second day running on Wednesday, Area Public Prosecutor Simon Nleya ordered police to release him and conduct further investigations into his allegations.

Twala, accompanied by plain-clothes detectives, arrived at the court after all the other cases for the day had gone through the “Set Down”.

The detective handling the investigation proceeded to Nleya's office, and were immediately joined by Mkhululi Nyathi, who is Twala’s lawyer appointed by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights.

Just before 1PM, Nyathi emerged and told reporters Nleya had directed that Twala be released pending further investigations by the police.

Kucaca Phulu of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights expressed “surprise” at the police decision to arrest Twala before investigating his claims.

“How can they dismiss Twala’s allegations before launching investigations?” Phulu said.

Nkomo told Radio VOP he was aware that a man had made allegations of sodomy against him.

“But nothing like that ever happened. This is a dirty game which I think is political,” said Nkomo.

Nkomo’s supporters say he is being smeared by political rivals to scupper his bid to succeed Joseph Msika as President Mugabe’s second Vice President.

CHOLERA RETURNS TO ZIMBABWE

Zimbabwe and international organizations fear another cholera outbreak might spread in the African country after 12 new cases of the waterborne disease were registered in a rural district last week, The Guardian reported Monday, citing the ZimOnline news agency.

Although none of the cases proved fatal, the United Nations and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) said that the disease could again spread in Zimbabwe as the rainy season starts as early as September and the root causes of the epidemic continue to plague the country.

The recent infections also caused panic in the affected communities, located more than 180 miles south-east of the capital Harare.

The latest cholera epidemic in the country killed 4,288 and infected close to 100,000 people between August 2008 and July 2009.

Although the government declared the cholera outbreak over in July, Rian van de Braak – the head of the MSF mission – said that the threat is “definitely not over.” According to UNICEF’s Chief of Health Dr. Peter Salama, another epidemic is “almost inevitable,” because no real improvements have been made to the country’s crumbling water and sanitation systems.

“There is a deterioration of infrastructure in the country, and Zimbabwe has not made progress in improving this infrastructure,” Salama said. “This will expose people to another cholera outbreak again.”

Cholera – an intestinal disease that gets transmitted through dirty water – can spread rampantly, especially in rural areas. Last December, for example, the World Health Organization estimated that 60,000 people in Zimbabwe were at imminent risk of infection. By Christmas 20,000 had contracted cholera and 1,000 had died

ZANU PF ACCUSES MDC OF PLOTTING A COUP

HARARE,

There is intensifying infighting in Zimbabwe’s unity government with President Robert Mugabe’s party accusing its coalition partners of trying to use the uneasy marriage to topple the veteran ruler, state media reported today.

The state-owned Herald newspaper, which is still a mouthpiece of Mr Mugabe’s Zanu PF said the principals in the Global Political Agreement (GPA) that include Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and his deputy Professor Arthur Mutambara had a tension filled meeting on Monday.

“This was after MDC (led by Mr Tsvangirai) on Sunday issued a statement saying Zanu PF was on a journey to oblivion while their path was irreversible,” the paper said.

It said negotiators who hammered the deal that led to the formation of the coalition in February had to be called in to discuss issues affecting the inclusive government.

Mr Tsvangirai’s MDC has been complaining that President Mugabe was not committed to the full implementation of the agreement signed on September 15 last year.

The party referred a number of outstanding issues in the GPA including the appointment of the central bank governor and the attorney general to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) for arbitration.

SADC and the African Union are the guarantors of the agreement.

But Zanu PF turned the tables and accused the MDC formations of failing to meet their part of the bargain because they had failed to campaign for the lifting of sanctions and the closure of pirate radio stations.

Monday’s meeting showed that the parties were drifting further apart with the claims that the MDC wants to topple Mr Mugabe from power, the paper said.

It said the MDC stood accused of “approaching the inclusive government as a vehicle for President Mugabe’s ouster and not as an opportunity to rebuild the country.”

“Zanu PF believes that MDC has displayed insincerity for sometime now,” the Herald quoted an unnamed source. “They say MDC officials held a rally in Manicaland at the weekend in which they told their supporters that they would use the inclusive government to remove President Mugabe.

TONGOGARA KILLED FOR LINKS TO DABENGWA

By Our Correspondent

HARARE – Former Zimbabwean Defence Minister, Enos Nkala has said that Josiah Tongogara, a former ZANLA guerrilla leader, was assassinated by President Robert Mugabe for having close links with former ZIPRA intelligence supremo – Dumiso Dabengwa.

ZANLA was the military wing of Mugabe’s ZANU (PF) party, while ZIPRA fought under the control of PF-ZAPU, which was being led by Joshua Nkomo, who is now late.

Although the two parties and their military wings fought for the same goal of realising Zimbabwe’s independence from Britain, they were protagonists and Nkala this week cliamed that Tongogara was killed for his ties to Dabengwa.

"Tongogara was eliminated because of his close liaison with Dumiso Dabengwa, the former ZIPRA military intelligence supremo," said Nkala, a Ndebele politician who is one of the most hated by his own tribesman for his support of Mugabe’s Gukurahundi massacres, in which the geriatric killed an estimated 20 000 Ndebele civilians between 1980 and 1987, in his bid to decimate ZAPU.

Tongogara died in a car crash in northern Mozambique on December 24, 1979 soon after the Lancaster House Conference that paved way to Zimbabwe’s independence a year later.

The popular guerrilla leader was visiting ZANLA guerilla camps based in that country to inform his subordinates of the outcome of the conference and the beginning of their return to their home country.

"I know who killed Tongogara," added Nkala who would, however, not reveal any names.

Nkala nonetheless gave a hint when he said, "If he had come back, the whole army of liberation forces who hero-worshipped him would have agitated for Tongo to become the country's leader and Mugabe knew that pretty well."

Without doubt, this was an innuendo in which Nkala was implicating Mugabe in Tongogara’s death, thereby cementing widely-held suspicion that Mugabe was indeed responsible for his former guerilla leader’s death.

It is strongly believed that Mugabe has never trusted Dabengwa and last year, the octogenarian ruler tried to assassinate arguably the most respected Ndebele politician and former Home Affairs minister, who had just ditched ZANU (PF) for Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn project, which was fronted by Simba Makoni.

This was after the two former ZANU (PF) Politburo members had vainly tried behind-the-scenes manoeuvres to have the 85-year-old Mugabe replaced as ZANU (PF) leader and Presidential candidate in the country’s March 29 elections.

Mugabe later lost the elections to Morgan Tsvangirai of the mainstream Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) but later claimed victory in the June 27 run-off, described as a "sham", after Tsvangirai had withdrawn, citing widespread violence that resulted from Mugabe’s campaign of retribution.

Dabengwa is currently the interim chairman of the revived ZAPU, which recently pulled out of a 1987 Unity Accord with Mugabe’s party, citing Mugabe’s failure to follow the letter and spirit of the Accord and the alleged assassination attempt as some of its main reasons.

Nkala has over the past two weeks been on "revelation spree" of Mugabe’s alleged assassinations of former party members who were allegedly killed for challenging his failed rule.

He also alleged that his successor as Defence Minister, Moven Mahachi was eliminated for his robust opposition to Zanu-PF leadership's unbridled looting of diamonds in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Nkala, formerly the Minister of Finance, National Supplies, Home Affairs and of Defence expanded on allegations he made last week that Mahachi, was also assassinated at the behest of Mugabe.

"Moven was an outsider in an exclusive club - the Committee of 26 - comprising politicians of Zezurus and Korekore origin. This committee of looters have controlled the army, the police, the CIO and appear to think that they went to war for self enrichment," Nkala said.

"To them, Mahachi was an obstacle in the quest to amass wealth using the pretext of fighting a prolonged war to restore sovereignty in the DRC just as they had done in Mozambique during the military campaign against Renamo. So he had to go."

Mahachi, a Manyika died aged 49, in a car crash on May 26, 2001. His Range Rover vehicle was reported to have collided with a smaller car as he travelled from Mutare to Nyanga after he attended a Zanu-PF Manicaland provincial meeting in his capacity as National Political Commissar.

Nkala added that Mugabe’s killing "phenomenon can be traced to Hebert Chitepo, Josiah Magama Tongogara, Chris Ushehokunze, and others like Sydney Malunga, Border Gezi and lately Elliot Manyika."

"The irony of it all is that Mugabe declares his victims national heroes. He is an opportunist who has used "omafikizolos" (Johnny-come-latelies) to do his dirty work if he feels surrounded by strong personalities whom he fears might eclipse him.

Nkala said he had not spoken before about Mahachi's death and other issues which he says are revealed in detail in his forthcoming book, which he says "chronicles goings-on in ZANU since its formation and the chicanery that led to the crafting of the Gukurahundi massacres in Matabeleland and the Midlands in the early 1980s".

"Gukurahundi had its seeds sown during our long years of detention in various detention camps," Nkala said.

"It was not a spontaneous reaction to lies about ZAPU wanting to overthrow the government or Mugabe wanting to establish a one-party state as widely believed."

"It was premeditated ethnic cleansing, which had been simmering since our early years in detention. The arms caches on ZAPU properties were a perfect excuse to unleash the notorious Five Brigade on the Ndebeles to avenge what their ancestors had done to the Shona people."

It was Nkala who established the dreaded Police Internal Security and Intelligence unit (PISI), a counterpart of the Central Intelligence Organisation, but operating within the police, when he was Minister of Home Affairs.

PISI terrorised and incarcerated scores of ZAPU supporters.

Nkala says that his book, "salted" abroad for safety, would be published only after his death, in a bid to "protect people named in it from possible victimization or elimination".

"The book opens a can of worms and efore its publication, I challenge people like Emmerson Mnangagwa, Sydney Sekeramayi who have headed the Security and Defence ministries, Robert Mugabe and me to a Truth and Reconciliation Commission about the atrocities that have been committed by this government.

"The commission will not be presided over by a local judge because the judges have been compromised."

He said in the event of his death before he had completed the book he has
instructed his publishers to release the book.

"If you want to know more about Robert Mugabe, seek for a day when you call Mugabe, (former ZANU PF secretary general, Edgar) Tekere and myself with some respectful people sitting there. He will chicken out. Why, because he knows we will dress him down and tell him who he is. I am not back-biting," Nkala recently told a press conference after a seminar to formulate Zimbabwe’s, Vision 2040, referring to President Mugabe. ZT/Zimdiaspora

Obama right on good governance in Africa

ZIMBABWE – HARARE – Jonathan Moyo is at it again! In a rumbling article published in the Gideon Gono sponsored online, Moyo spews venom on Obama’s call for good governance in Africa.

What is even malicious is that Moyo tries to twist what Obama actually said in Accra so that he can attack, malign and impugn Obama’s achievements whilst at the same time trying to elevate himself to Mr-know-it- all.

The people of Zimbabwe, Africa and the world are not stupid and will not be swayed by a political confusionist like Jonathan Moyo who pretends that the title, “professor’ makes him the only fountain of knowledge in the world

I am not saying President Obama should not be criticized. President Obama is a mere mortal who can also make mistakes and therefore should not be above criticism.

That is why in recent months he has faced some of the harshest criticism in America since he became president in the explosive health care debate. However, its one thing to criticize a man for what he said than to invent lies so as to grab the limelight for criticizing President Obama

Moyo claims that President Obama wants to impose good governance on Africa. This is clearly not true for in his speech in Accra, President Obama was very clear and said, “Africa ‘s future is in the hands of Africans….

As I said in Cairo, each nation gives life to democracy in its own way, and in line with its own traditions. But history offers a clear verdict: governments that respect the will of their own people are more prosperous, more stable, and more successful than governments that do not.”

Thus President Obama never pretended that he wanted to force any African nation to adopt good governance but he only reiterated a simple fact that those African nations that are well governed has a higher chance to develop than those that are governed badly

He went on to give an example of Kenya which had a per capita higher than South Korea at independence but has been outpaced and also Zimbabwe where the economy virtually collapsed in the last decade.

It is a clear fact that countries like Kenya and Zimbabwe are very rich in natural resources but corruption, nepotism and tribalism which are all hallmarks of bad governance has destroyed Kenya and many African countries’ potential.

The so called Mount Kenya mafia, a tribalist clique has held Kenya to ransom, looting the nation’s resources for their own ends whilst the majority of Kenyans suffer in slums like Kibera which should be a scar on the conscience of every Kenyan leader.

It is this type of bad governance that lead a clique of so-called strongman to claim ownership of the country by clinging on to power even when they are rejected by the people in elections as happened in both Kenya and Zimbabwe

President Obama was very right because Africa is littered with failed states and poverty due to bad governance. Take for example countries like the DRC which is one of the richest in terms of resources from diamonds, platinum, copper, cobalt, gold, timber and many others. The huge Inga Dam can light the whole of Africa yet more than half of the DRC population have no access to electricity and the majority of the people live in abject poverty

Is it not because of bad governance that the DRC was reduced to a personal property by the late Mobutu Sese Seko as well as Laurent Kabila? Is it not a fact that Mobutu, like most African leaders Mugabe included , had palaces in the most expensive suburbs scattered across the world? So far only 6 billion dollars has been recovered in his personal accounts not forgetting that the vast sums of wealth were kept in 3rd party accounts. If that is not bad governance, then what is it? With this type of governance, how can Africa develop?

Moyo also made a scathing attack depicting President Obama as an ignoramus when he said, ‘ Social science literature on this matter is very clear and decided. It is therefore cheap, uninformed and unacceptable propaganda that in this day and age in the 21st century we have merchants of global confusion and their local mouthpieces in the MDC-T and among dubious NGOs who go around claiming that governance is the most critical issue facing Zimbabwe today.”

Moyo must know that President Obama is not an ignorant merchant of global confusion like he want to mislead the ever dwindling readers of his articles. In fact , since Moyo thinks that brilliance is only measured by the title, “ Professor”, he must be reminded that President Obama is also a Professor of Constitutional law although he does not move around calling himself Professor Obama because he knows that its not titles that are important but the conduct of the person with such a title.

President Obama is not a fool like Moyo’s master Mugabe who is moving around calling himself the, “ president, head of state and government as well as the commander-in-chief of the defense forces” because he knows that he is a thief. It is because of his simplicity that Obama has achieved and inspired the whole world in a way no any other leader has done.Moyo may hate Obama but this will never diminish his achievements

Moyo also makes the mischievous allegation that President Obama is living in the past when he said
“Obama and his advisors should be in a position to know better not to claim in 2009 of all times that governance is the key to development because American scholars such as the celebrated Harvard social scientist and author of the international bestseller entitled “The Clash of Civilisations” – Samuel P. Huntington – who died a few months ago, put paid to that false and ridiculous argument in a highly acclaimed and widely used edited book, “Understanding Political Development”, first published in 1987”

Such a statement is a veiled attack suggesting that President Obama is out of touch not only of events in 2009 but events in 1987 when Moyo claims the so-called book that shows that good governance does not lead to development was written. What a shame? Why do some of our so-called Professors celebrate their uselessness in society by exposing themselves as fools?

Firstly, who is living in the past, President Obama or Jonathan Moyo? It is Moyo who destroyed the media in Zimbabwe , closing independent newspapers, churning Hondo yeminda on radio and tv everyday in order to prop a failed regime and haunting Zimbabwe’s finest generation of media workers into exile. Contrast this with President Obama who has revolutionized politics in the world through the innovative use of the internet as a potent political mobilization and fundraising tool. A man who is showing the way in the world with the innovative use of the new media like the virtual town hall meetings he has pioneered. To say such a man lives in the past borders on the lunatic fringe and can only come from a grasshopper minded somnambulist who must shut up.

Moyo must know that it is only through good governance that development can be achieved. For with good governance comes the rule of law, freedom of the press, democracy, opportunity, economic growth, free and fair political competion. The opposite, which is bad government which Moyo supports will only lead to tyranny, dictatorship, corruption, economic collapse and poverty.

Moyo must not be jealous of President Obama’s achievements to the extend of trying to rubbish a man who has inspired and given hope to the whole world when Moyo has brought death, suffering, hate, political polarization, economic destruction and poverty during his term as minister of propaganda .

Zimbabwe legislators hit by diarrhoea

ZIMBABWE – BULAWAYO- Legislators got a shock of their tummies when they ate contaminated food at a local hotel in Bulawayo.

The parliamentarians who are members of the African Parliamentarians Network Against Corruption had their meeting disrupted as they spent most of it jostling for the toilets.

The sudden sickness affected the whole delegation including the speaker who had to take unannounced breaks.

One of the MPs who spoke on condition of anonymity because they had settled the matter with the hotel confirmed the incident to The Zimbabwe Telegraph.

“The problem was with the chicken we ate. It was drama I tell you, all of us going to the toilets. There was too much congestion at the ablutions! some of us then resorted to use our rooms. Imagine those who had to go all the way 4th floor! the lifts were not so reliable so they had to use the steps” he said.

The MPs wrote to the hotel management that they were not pleased by the embarrassment caused to them.

However, the source said that the legislators were in general agreement that the issue had to be taken up to the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority because such a situation might pose as a danger to the Zimbabwe tourism drive.

Zimbabwe: GNU Parties Seek Election Freeze Extension

Loughty Dube

Harare — THE three political parties in the inclusive government want to extend the one-year moratorium on by-elections by three years, government sources have revealed.

In the global political agreement (GPA) signed by Zanu PF and the two MDC formations last September, the parties agreed not to field candidates against each other for a year stipulating that only the party that previously held the seat could field a candidate. But this does not stop other parties or independent candidates from contesting the seat.

The parties identified elections as the main cause of violence in the country, hence the agreement on the moratorium not to contest against each other in by-elections for a year.

The moratorium lapses on September 15, hence the talks to extend it.

Authoritative government sources told the Zimbabwe Independent this week that the three political parties were now working on extending the moratorium by three years.

"There are negotiations within the inclusive government to extend the moratorium on the holding of by-elections and none of the parties are eager to go for pending by-elections now as the situation is not conducive for all of them," one of the sources said. "There is fear that violence might raise its head at a time when the inclusive government still has pending issues of the GPA."

With the success of the inclusive government on the economic front, the sources said Zanu-PF was afraid of a backlash from the electorate in the constituencies where by-elections are due while the MDC-T was not certain if its popularity has grown in the so-called Zanu PF strongholds.

The sources said the Arthur Mutambara-led MDC was against the holding of the by-elections and preferred an extension of the inclusive government to five years, as it feared losing the only remaining seven parliamentary seats under its control.

However, the Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, Gorden Moyo, said it was not the intention of the inclusive government to extend the moratorium on elections and said everything was moving towards the holding of the by-elections.

"There are no intentions to amend the GPA as we are implementing it as it is. We do not believe that the by-elections will be violent and we are putting in guarantees to ensure that any electoral competition will be fair," Moyo said.

He, however, said he did not know if the three principals had discussed the possible extension of the one-year agreement.

Zanu PF chief negotiator Patrick Chinamasa said the extension of the one-year moratorium depended on the three political parties.

"The political parties can extend the moratorium depending on what they agree on but I do not know whether the principals have initiated discussions on that matter, so far I am not aware of any listing of that matter," Chinamasa said.

There are close to 15 by-elections due in the senate and the House of Assembly but President Mugabe has yet not called for the holding of by-elections.

Several MDC-T members have pending cases in the courts and if they are all prosecuted, convicted and sentenced to more than six months imprisonment, the number of by-lections due could rise to more than 30 throughout the country.
