Insist on Your Right to Education

Uneducated citizenry is like a pitch any game can be played on it. Illiteracy is what has given the politicians in Ghana the chance to fool so many people for so a long a time.

The Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken a swipe at his vice Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah for his double-standard posture on the accommodation of former President Jerry John Rawlings.

In a meeting with the NDC’s Tertiary Education Institution Network (TEIN) on Tuesday, Dr. Spio-Garbrah said the president must take steps to address the gaping cracks within the party.

He cited, among others, the failure of the government to provide a befitting accommodation for former President Rawlings and his family after their Ridge residence was razed down on February 14, 2010.

The comments have incurred the wrath of the functional executives, causing the party to subsequently issue a press statement Wednesday condemning his action and that of one Dela Coffie.

Dr. Kwabena Adjei who signed the release on behalf of the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the NDC noted, “FEC is dismayed by the statement on the accommodation of the former First Family, H. E Jerry John Rawlings and Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, alleged to have been made by Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, who is a Vice Chairman of the Party and also Chairman of the Communications Committee.”

According to Dr. Adjei, Dr. Spio-Garbrah was tasked with the responsibility of finding accommodation for the couple but he shirked that responsibility.

“FEC wishes to state that Dr. Spio-Garbrah was appointed Chairman of a three-member committee set up to resolve the former first couple’s accommodation problem. Unfortunately, Dr. Spio-Gabrah left Ghana for his UK base without calling a meeting of the committee. Indeed he is yet to call a meeting of that committee.”

Dr. Kwabena Adjei also tackled Dela Coffie, a leading member of Friends of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings (FONKAR), who is on record to have attacked the integrity of President J. E. A. Mills and the Vice-President, John Mahama.

“The NDC wants to make it clear that it does not know anyone by the name Dela Coffie. Neither does the party recognize FONKAR nor any such groups and their purported executives.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Party shall fish out and identify the likes of Dela Coffie and deal with them in accordance with the relevant provisions of the party’s Constitution.”

The party has therefore advised its members to respect their fellow members and adhere strictly to the provisions of the NDC’s Constitution.
