Insist on Your Right to Education

Uneducated citizenry is like a pitch any game can be played on it. Illiteracy is what has given the politicians in Ghana the chance to fool so many people for so a long a time.

President John Evans Atta Mills has issued a stern warning to persons who he says are scheming to create the impression that the country is insecure.

The President who was commending the Chiefs and people of Bawku for the relative peace in the area said the country cannot develop if peace and harmony are not visible.

Sounding very emotional and incensed, the President said “If we want development, we must all be prepared to ensure that there is peace and harmony.

Unfortunately there seem to be some people who want to create fear and panic to engender a feeling of fear and insecurity amongst our people. I want to send a message to those people, they will not succeed. Let me repeat, those who want to destabilize the process will not succeed.

I have directed the law enforcement agencies to deal appropriately and decisively with those who decide that peace is not what they want” he said.

President Mills said this on Saturday November 6, at a gathering of chiefs and people of the Upper East Region as part of the Region’s 50th Anniversary celebration.

The President who recently met with security chiefs after a report that armed robbers had attacked a Tamale-Bound bus and forced male and female passengers to have sex with each other, expressed optimism that the truth in that case will come out.

“We may have our own reasons for trying to instill fear in people, but at the end of the day the lies will be unearthed and we will see the truth for what it is.

Who is going to invest in a nation that has a feeling of insecurity? Who is going to bring his resources into our dear nation if indeed our people live in fear? People want to create panic and fear and do not want the progress of this nation even though they are preaching from the rooftops that they are interested in the development of our people. Such people are only pursuing their narrow and myopic interests and we will not allow them” he said.

President Mills reiterated that the NDC government has a vision of investing in people and would continue to improve education which is crucial to achieving that goal.

“We have begun to tackle seriously the elimination of schools under trees. In a few months’ time, you will begin to see that our promise has been fulfilled” he noted.

He mentioned the distribution of free text books, uniforms, and an improvement in the school feeding programme as some of the educational initiatives that have been put in place.

He disclosed that his recent trips to China and Japan that saw the signing of several agreements, would give a major boost to the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority SADA.
