New NPP constitution seeks bigger electoral college
The opposition New Patriotic Party has presented proposed amendments to the party’s constitution to its Members of Parliament (MPs).
The MPs are expected to study the document and help make the necessary corrections ahead of the party’s impending national conference next month.
Delegates attending the conference will then vote on whether the amendments should be accepted.
The report proposes the expansion of the party's electoral college.
It also proposes reducing the number of candidates to three who can file to contest as presidential candidates on the ticket of the party.
If the number is more than three, an electoral college will be convened to prune the number of candidates to three.
As the NPP prepares to go to conference to possibly vote on a new party constitution, there are suggestions that all is not well within the party.
There are reports of in-fighting, connected with the party’s electoral defeat last year.
For example, former President Kufuor is said to be opposed to plans to expand the party’s electoral college.
Amidst all of the talk of serious in-fighting a former chairman of the party, Haruna Esseku, is urging calm and a concerted effort to reunite the party.
He says the NPP stands to lose a great deal if its top leaders continue to blame each other for its electoral defeat.
