Nigeria Will turn the Oil Tap on for Ghana


President John Evans Atta Mills, today secured an assurance from the Government of Nigeria that it shall supply crude oil to Ghana on friendly terms. Under the arrangement, Nigeria has pledged to supply Ghana between 60 thousand and 65 thousand barrels of crude oil daily, with 90 days credit.The Nigerian government also pledged to ensure to ensure regular supply of gas to help improve Ghana’s energy needs. This was the outcome of talks held today in Abuja, Nigeria between the President of Ghana and President Umar Yar’adua of Nigeria.

A statement signed by Deputy Information Minister, James Agyenim-Boateng, said President Atta Mills also used the occasion to call for the strengthening of relations between the two countries. President Atta Mills said he will do whatever it takes to ensure that a Ghana-Nigeria relation is put on a higher pedestal. The President is in Nigeria with other government officials including Finance Minister Dr Kwabena Dufour, Energy Minister Dr Oteng Adjei and Foreign Affairs Minister Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni to hold bilateral talks on energy, trade and investment with his Nigerian counterpart.


President Atta Mills, who commended Nigerian business executives for investing in Ghana, gave the assurance that his administration will ensure a level playing field for all investors. He also expressed gratitude to President Umar Yar’adua for his role in ensuring peace in Ghana before, during and after the 2008 general elections. President Atta Mills For his part, the President of Nigeria, Umar Yar’adua, observed that both Ghana and Nigeria provide leadership for Africa. He was therefore hopeful that the warm relations between Ghana and Nigeria would be used for adopting common positions on international affairs.
