Government has given the strongest indication yet that it would reclaim all state lands sold by the Kufuor administration.
Chairman of the Lands Commission Board, Nana Adjei Ampofo, who disclosed this to Joy News on Monday stressed that the lands are required for important government institutions.
Much of the land, acquired by prominent public officials, is situated at the International Students Hostel and the fringes of the Tema Motorway.
Nana Ampofo said some of the areas have been already earmarked for the construction of offices for the Foreign Ministry, adding, structures on such lands would be demolished.
“On the same parcel of land, the ministry cannot put up a building and somebody else puts up a building; those will be demolished,” Nana Ampofo stated.
“The area called the International Students Hostel…we are saying that we want a land for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for whom it was intentionally meant.”
He indicated that the ministry had set aside funds for the project and that work must start soon.
The board chairman played down suggestions that the plan by the commission to reclaim lands is politically-motivated.
“These things we are doing not because we want to pay back anybody; we’re doing these things in the broader national interest,” he stressed.
“We are going to deal with very prominent citizens, very honourable people.”
