U.S. Embassy in South Africa Closed 2nd Day

U.S. facilities in South Africa remained closed Wednesday, the day after U.S. officials said they received information about a potential terrorist threat.

The U.S. Embassy in Pretoria, and consulates in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg shut down Tuesday after authorities received "credible" information about a terrorist threat.

"We are not discussing the information we have received, but it is just in South Africa," U.S. embassy spokeswoman Sharon Hudson Dean told The Christian Science Monitor.

Dean said it appeared there were no threats involving U.S. interests in other parts of Africa.

In Washington, U.S. State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said the decision to close the embassy and consulates was made "as a precaution."

"The embassy will reopen as soon as we've completed our assessment of the security posture," Kelly said.
