THE ASHANTI Regional Police Command is holding in its custody a heavily-built gym instructor who on Wednesday allegedly raped a 19-year old girl at an open-space drinking spot at Asafo Market, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region. The suspect, Eric Bawuah, a 28-year-old gym instructor at Cantonments in Accra, allegedly had forcible sex with the 19-year-old seamstress apprentice (name withheld) at Nungua at the Neoplan Station area of the Asafo Market at 4.00am in the full glare of onlookers. Briefing DAILY GUIDE, Chief Inspector Yussif Tanko of the Public Affairs Directorate said the victim underwent the alleged unfortunate ordeal when she came to the station to board a bus to Accra after visiting her sister in Kumasi. He noted that the stoutly-built suspect, who was loitering around the vicinity, upon sighting the girl, allegedly held her hand at knife point and bundled her into a taxi and took her to a nearby washing bay. Chief Inspector Tanko said Bawuah purportedly dragged the girl to an open-space drinking spot near the washing bay, tore the victim’s clothes into pieces and undressed himself afterwards. After that, he noted, the suspect, who is a former Mr. Ghana contestant, put on a condom, sat on a chair and asked the fair-coloured girl to sit on his erected penis in the presence of some guys who were at the spot. According to the Chief Inspector, though the girl screamed aloud for help, nobody came to her rescue as Bawuah allegedly took the girl through a hot round of sex till a Good Samaritan courageously appeared on the scene and rescued her. He said the rescuer then called in the police who promptly arrived at the scene and arrested the suspect, taking along the used condom. Chief Inspector Tanko noted that the suspect, in his caution statement, admitted having sex with the victim but indicated that the girl consented to the act after taking 10 Ghana Cedis from him. He said Bawuah, who is currently languishing in police cells, also denied having sex with the girl at knife point. The victim, according to the Chief Inspector, in her caution statement, alleged that the suspect after raping her, robbed her of an amount of 30 Ghana Cedis in addition, an allegation the suspect vehemently denied. Indicating that the police had commenced investigations into the case, Chief Inspector Tanko disclosed that Bawuah had been charged with two counts of robbery and rape. Meanwhile, attempts by the police to secure a court remand for the suspect in order to give the police ample time for their investigations hit the rocks yesterday, following the courts resumption of its annual legal session. However, Chief Inspector Tanko told DAILY GUIDE that the police would make another effort on Monday to get the court to remand the suspect to aid their investigations. He noted that the police would forward the docket to the Attorney General’s office for advice when investigations were concluded for them to know their next line of action. Meanwhile, in a chat with the paper, the victim who is yet to recover from the alleged ordeal, urged the police to quicken their investigations to ensure that the law deals appropriately with the suspect Daily Guide/Morgan Owusu, Kumasi |
