Insist on Your Right to Education

Uneducated citizenry is like a pitch any game can be played on it. Illiteracy is what has given the politicians in Ghana the chance to fool so many people for so a long a time.

22 Suspected Criminals Arrested In Police Swoop

By Lawrence Markwei & Richmond Amoako

Twenty-two suspected crimi-nals were arrested in a dawn swoop yesterday by Police from the Accra Regional Command in a special operation.

The Public Relations Officer at the Regional Command, Kwaku Dompreh, said acting on a tip-off the Police cordoned off a house at Nungua where the alledged criminals were staying and arrested all the occupants made up of five females and 17 males.

He said a search of the house revealed two computers, seven vehicle registration number plates, three cutlasses, papers-cut in the sizes of cedi notes and a smock with talisman enclosed.

Mr Dompreh said as part of the investigations to establish the criminal status of those arrested and others apprehended earlier in the week, the 22 suspects would be paraded today for identification by the public.

He encouraged armed robbery victims to come forward to identify their attackers.

Meanwhile, the landlord of the house “King Lord Adotey Akrong, 54, who was also arrested during the operation claimed that neither he nor his tenants were criminials.

In an interview with the Times at the police station, he said, he started as a sailor with the defunct Black Star Line, the former national shipping carrier and eventually became a civil engineer.

“This was how I came by money to build a mansion and own some vehicles,” he added.

King Akrong denied engaging many criminal activities.

“I am presently a supervisor at the T and T Properties, a subsidiary of DDP Advertising company owned by Mr Torgbor Mensah, a well-known estate developer and an advertiser.

King Akrong claimed ownership of the smock with a talisman explaining that it is an Asafo (warrior) attire as I am an Asafo member in this area.

He said to the best of his knowledge, none of his tenants had also engaged in any nefarious activities since he screened them before taking them in.

“I am, therefore, asking for the law to take its course for our innocence to be established so that we are set free,” he said.

Meanwhile the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Rose Bio Atinga, told the media that the police would depend on such tip-offs to ensure that residents of the city moved about without fear of being robbed or harmed.

DCOP Atinga said the police had mounted a night operation where vehicles at certain points were stopped and searched, adding that “the exercise is meant to curtail the activities of armed robbers in the city.”

She said particular attention would be focused on motor-cycle and KIA Saloon cars since they were often used to commit crimes in the city.

“The Police will also continue their day-and-night swoops on known criminal dens and arrest suspicious characters who loiter about late at night in the city,” she said.

DCOP Atinga asked the public to co-operate with the police operations since it was meant to protect their interest stressing that “robbers and their accomplices who supply them with guns should know that we are on their trial and at the opportune time we will arrest all of them.”
