At long last, President John Evans Atta Mills yesterday inaugurated a 10-member police council chaired by the Vice President of the country, Mr John Dramani Mahama to help investigate and counsel the President on security issues. Peace FM’s fact findings show that, most of the public’s priority is to know how the new Police Council would handle ACP Kofi Boakye’s case, as to whether he would be re-instated or not. The Council is made up of the Interior Minister, Mr Cletus Avoka, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr Paul Tawiah Quaye, the Deputy Attorney-General, Mr Ebo Barton-Oduro and others. During the swearing in ceremony of the council at the castle, the Vice President congratulated the Ghana Police for their indispensable role in the country and urged them to keep on with their good work. He said: “I’ll like to use this opportunity to congratulate the police for what they have been doing; they do their best to combat crime in our society.” The Vice President also cautioned the police that, they would not be spares if caught in any form of crime. The ACP who is currently on leave, is noted for having potentials to help in the combating of crime in the country. ACP Kofi Boakye was indicted in 2006 following the recommendation of the Georgina Wood Committee which investigated the MV Benjamin cocaine issue, which led to the conviction of Kwabena Amaning, alias Tagor, and Issa Abass in 2006. The two were released last Friday following an Appeal Court order. The Committee had wanted the ACP prosecuted but the police administration indicted him pending further investigations; but just a day before leaving office, President Kufuor reinstated him and ordered the police administration to pay him are that was due to him. However, when the former Presdient left office, ACP Kofi Boakye had to remain on leave, following orders from the new administration. Source: peacefmonline.com |
