Insist on Your Right to Education

Uneducated citizenry is like a pitch any game can be played on it. Illiteracy is what has given the politicians in Ghana the chance to fool so many people for so a long a time.

Ghanaians have little faith in the NDC government- Kan Dapaa

THE FORMER Minister of Defence and MP for Afigya Sekyere, Kan Dapaah says Ghanaians are already licking their wounds and brooding over the inability of the New Patriotic Party to maintain power in last year's elections.

The NPP MP said the general feeling throughout the country is that the people are greatly disappointed in themselves for failing to renew the mandate of the NPP. “Hit the streets and talk to people, and see if they are happy with the administration of the NDC? They will tell you they have regretted voting for them,” he noted.

Hon. Kan Dapaah, who made the statement while addressing members of the Wesley College chapter of the Tertiary Education Student Network of the NPP (TESCON) noted: “Nobody can deny the fact that Ghanaians are not happy with the performance of the current administration of NDC under President Mills and are already clamouring for the return of the NPP.”

According to the former Minister, the fact that the opposition party continues to remain solid and is able to attract the support of majority of Ghanaians six months after relinquishing power is enough attestation that Ghanaians have little faith in the NDC government.

Hon. Kan Dapaah buttressed his assertion by comparing the nation's political atmosphere to that of the United States, where Democrats have overshadowed the Republicans after defeating them in last year's elections.

He noted: “Go to America and see, the Republicans are still in disarray and do not even know their left from their right, but when you come to Ghana you can see that the people continue to sing the praises of the NPP, this is an indication that Ghanaians are already fed up with the NDC government.”

Hon. Kan Dapaah, however, said he would not blame Ghanaian voters for the misfortunes of the NPP, but stated that the party ought to blame itself for bowing cheaply to the NDC. In the view of the NPP Member of Parliament, the previous government did a lot of disservice to the country and the people by allowing power to slip through their hands. “We gave the power to them, we allowed disunity and quest for individual power to take centre stage of our activities and we paid dearly for it,” he noted.

The Afigya Sekyere MP noted that the previous administration undertook several laudable policies such as the National Health Insurance Scheme, the Livelihood Empowerment against Poverty (LEAP), Free Maternal Care, and School Feeding Programme among others, which lessened the plight of the down trodden and improved upon their living conditions.

He, however, expressed worry that just six months after the NDC assumed the mantle of leadership of this country, all these beautiful policies and achievements are being washed down the drain.

The former Minister further noted that the NDC, apart from muddying the modest economic gains of its predecessors, are gradually eroding unique democratic credentials built by the country over the past eight years by resorting to unorthodox means to rule the country.

He mentioned the recent witch-hunting and arbitrary arrest of members of past government and other personalities perceived to be sympathetic to the NPP as some of the actions that are slowly denigrating the nation's democratic records.

The Minority Leader in Parliament and MP for Suame, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu chastised the NDC government for subjecting Ghanaians to a lot of hardships as a result of its poor economic policies.

He observed that the government was doing the direct opposites of what it promised it would when voted into power stating that “the NDC is now taking money out of peoples' pockets when it promised the vice versa, it has further worsened the plights of the ordinary Ghanaian by increasing petroleum prices drastically when it pledged to reduce it drastically.”

Still lambasting the government of being incompetent, the Minority Leader asserted that the poor performance of the President Mills administration has not only had negative repercussions on the economy and the people of Ghana but has also had serious influence on the performance of his counterpart in the house of parliament, Hon. Alban Bagbin, whom he claims, has virtually become disabled.

According to him, the Majority Leader has now become a pale shadow of his former self 'because he can no longer lead the house”. He said the Nadowli West MP has not been able to present a single paper before the house because according to him, his party is in such a poor shape that they cannot even put their house in order.
