Ghana:Police lambasted for poor handling of traffic on Obama's visit
The police have come under criticism from motorist for their poor handling of traffic on routes which were blocked for the period of President Barack Obama's visit.
Several major roads were blocked and diversions made to ease the flow of traffic, but thousands of people were left stranded in areas where there were road blocks.
Around the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation where the Ako Adjei Interchange was closed to vehicular traffic Joy News witnessed a family with a coffin carrying a deceased relative on their shoulders to La for burial.
It took insults of some stranded pedestrians for the police on duty to allow a taxi carrying a pregnant woman in labour to be taken to hospital.
These pedestrians said they would walk to their various destinations in La and surrounding areas despite the difficulties involved.
“If you don't go, you will be left behind; when you start trekking may be I can see him passing,” a pedestrian told Joy News.
“They [destroyed] the road so I will manage to go like that,” Anko, a resident of Chorkor in Accra, said.
Drivers and other pedestrians with luggage who could not walk expressed their frustrations to Joy News.
“I was here [Kanda] from 8:15 am and from the look of things, the traffic situation is very bad. I have seen a lot of old ladies getting out of their cars [and] walking,” a driver narrated.
“Very strangely I saw a coffin being carried from a car [especially] in this 21st century, [that] is strange.”
