Google Launches Akan Language Option

Popular internet search engine Google has launched a new language option in Akan, with the aim of encouraging more Ghanaians to use the internet. Google is available in over 40 languages including Hausa, and the latest addition of Akan allows users who visit the Google Ghana website to browse in their local language instead of English.

Manager of Google Ghana, Estelle Akofio-Sowah says the move is part of Google’s ambition to include non-English speakers in the internet process. “Google realised that a lot of people do not speak English and therefore a lot of people are not being allowed access but they should be able to benefit fully from the power or the information that the internet has to offer,” she told Joy news. Joy news also visited some internet cafes in Accra to see how relevant this new language addition is to internet users and most people we spoke to said it was a good idea.
