Insist on Your Right to Education

Uneducated citizenry is like a pitch any game can be played on it. Illiteracy is what has given the politicians in Ghana the chance to fool so many people for so a long a time.

Minority heckle Zita in Parliament

Information Minister Zita Okaikoi, had a tough time in Parliament.
Information Minister Zita Okaikoi, had a tough time in Parliament.
Information Minister, Zita Okaikoi was Tuesday heckled by the Minority in Parliament who claimed she provided unsatisfactory answers to questions on the floor of the House.

She was in the House to answer questions relating to her ministry, but the answers she gave triggered further probing by particularly, the minority side of the House.

The Member of Parliament for Takoradi, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah had tabled a question before the House on when Ghanaians across the nation will be able to watch the Glo Premier League live on Ghana Television since the station has natiowide coverage.

According to Joy News’ Sammy Darko, the minister had told the House the state broadcaster intended to telecast "all 36 league matches" of the Glo Premier League currently in its final stages, however it failed, along with other stations, to win the bid for the rights. OMG currently has the rights and until it expires, not much can be done.

The minority pounced on the answer, arguing that the minister had misinformed the House because the matches in the league are far in excess of the 36 she quoted.

Indeed the Ghanaian League is a 16-club league in which each club plays the others in a two-tie, home-and-away basis. That makes a total of 480 matches.

The Miinster however enjoyed some support from the Majority Leader in answering the question as the two kept close notes while the Minority screamed 'coach, coach' repeatedly.

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Doe Adjaho, who was in the chair, also intervened in some of the questions and amidst protests from the minority, eventually ruled that questioning time was over for the minister and proceded to discharge her.

The action brought the Minority even screaming the more, arguing the Speaker had adopted guerrilla tactics to bail the minister out and prevented her from answering questions.

Is Zita still at post despite the poor live televising of President Obama's speech? I cannot believe this. Has she watched the clip herself and what did she make of it if she has? We are trumpeting Obama's visit but could not let world hear what he wanted to say about Africa. It is a shame and Zita must take responsibility as a sector minister for the poor sound and image quality.
