Insist on Your Right to Education

Uneducated citizenry is like a pitch any game can be played on it. Illiteracy is what has given the politicians in Ghana the chance to fool so many people for so a long a time.

Former first lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings says she is looking for a rented apartment after her Ridge residence was razed down by fire.

She has been ‘perching’ with her mom whilst her husband stays at a "village house" in Tefle near Sogakope, a situation she says is not good enough for "married life".

She was speaking to Evans Mensah, sit-in host of the Super Morning Show on Joy FM on Wednesday.

Government has promised to provide an alternative accommodation for the ex-first family, but Mrs Rawlings says they are still waiting for the state to do something about their residence.

The Ridge residence was completely burnt on February 14, 2010, in amidst a heavy down pour, provoking a huge controversy on what might have started the fire.

Opposition elements including Nana Darkwa, an NPP sympathizer accused the ex-president of torching his own house.

But Mrs. Rawlings said that accusation is a shame; but even more shameful is the justification that people have the right to free speech, she said, adding that rights must go with responsibilities.

Mrs. Rawlings spoke on a wide range of issues including education, the 31st December Women’s Movement and her family's relationship with the ruling government.

She chastised the erstwhile NPP government for doing very little to reduce the poverty situation in the country in their eight-year term, adding, the new government is struggling because of the squalor and depravity left behind by the NPP.

She said the NPP completely mismanaged the water system in the country leading to the worsening water borne diseases in the country.

She would not comment on happenings within the NPP, or its likely flag-bearer Nana Akufo-Addo, because there are a lot of “positive” things like education and women empowerment to talk about.

She would also not talk about her political ambitions, except to say that she will not retire from politics.
